چکیده

A key issue when designing and implementing largescale publish/subscribe systems is how to efficiently propagate subscriptions among the brokers of the system. Brokers require this information in order to forward incoming events only to interested users, filtering out unrelated events, which can save significant overheads (particularly network bandwidth and processing time at the brokers). In this paper we contribute the notion of subscription summaries, a mechanism appropriately compacting subscription information. We develop the associated data structures and matching algorithms. The proposed mechanism can handle event/subscription schemata that are rich in terms of their attribute types and powerful in terms of the allowed operations on them. Our major results are that the proposed mechanism (i) is scalable, with the bandwidth required to propagate subscriptions increasing only slightly, even at hugescales, and (ii) is significantly more efficient, up to orders of magnitude, depending on the scale, with respect to the bandwidth requirements for propagating subscriptions.

Efficient Distributed Event Processing using Subscription Summaries in Large Scale Publish/Subscribe Systems

A key issue when designing and implementing large-scale publish/subscribe systems is how to efficiently propagate user subscriptions among the brokers of the system. In this paper we contribute the notion of broker subscription summaries and accompanying distributed and scalable algorithms for subscription summary propagation and event filtering and routing. In addition we present a performance...

Subscription Tree Pruning: A Structure-Independent Routing Optimization for General-Purpose Publish/Subscribe Systems

A main challenge in distributed publish/subscribe systems is the efficient and scalable routing of incoming information (event messages). For largescale publish/subscribe services, subscription forwarding has been established as a prevalent routing scheme. It reduces the network traffic for event routing due to selectively forwarding event messages to relevant parts of the network only. To furt...

Sub-2-Sub: Self-Organizing Content-Based Publish Subscribe for Dynamic Large Scale Collaborative Networks

In this paper, we address the problem of constructing scalable content-based publish/subscribe systems. Publish/subscribe systems are asynchronous event-notification systems in which a published event is forwarded to exactly those nodes that have previously subscribed for that event. Subscriptions can range from a simple specification of merely the type of an event to a specification of the val...

Subscription Summarization: A New Paradigm

We contribute a new paradigm for publish/subscribe systems. It is centered on the novel notion of subscription summarization. We first present the summarization structures for a broker’s subscriptions and accompanying algorithms, which operate on the summary structures to match incoming events to the brokers with relevant subscriptions and for the maintenance of subscriptions in the face of upd...

The PADRES Distributed Publish/Subscribe System

Workflow management systems are traditionally centralized, creating a single point of failure and a scalability bottleneck. In collaboration with Cybermation, Inc., we have developed a content-based publish/subscribe platform, called PADRES, which is a distributed middleware platform with features inspired by the requirements of workflow management and business process execution. These features...
